"Preparing Makes Sense!"
Thank you for visiting the ReadyTampa website. The purpose of the site is to increase awareness of the importance of disaster preparation in our communities, promote the Ready Campaign's three step process to better preparedness: Get a Kit, Make a Plan and Be Informed, and to provide easy access to some of the available resources in the local area.
Don't forget, September 2008 is National Preparedness Month. Take some time to do what you can to ensure your family is prepared!
1. Get a Kit
Your disaster kit should contain everything that you might need in the event that your family has to survive in your home with no public water or power for at least three days. The following list can be used in creating or updating your kit. Remember, this list is generic, so be sure to add any items that are not on the list that would be important to you and your family. And don't forget supplies for your pets!
- One gallon of water per person per day
- Non-perishable food
- Can opener and utensils
- Cooler
- Pet food and supplies
- NOAA weather radio
- Portable, battery-operated AM/FM radio
- Flashlights, glow sticks, lanterns
- Extra batteries
- First aid kit, prescription medications
- Insect repellant, sunscreen
- Hand sanitizer, moist wipes
- One change of clothes per person
- Blankets, ponchos
- Fire extinguisher, carbon monoxide alarm
- Bleach, disinfectants
- Trash bags, plastic, tarp, duct tape
- Work gloves, pliers, hammer, screw driver
- Camera (and film if not digital)
- Cash

2. Make a Plan
Every family should have a family plan. Your plan should be as comprehensive as possible and include steps that you can take both now and in the time of disaster to ensure their safety and the security of your property and possessions. You can obtain a family emergency plan template by visiting the Ready America website.
3. Be Informed
Be sure to familiarize yourself and your family with your county's emergency information. Know your evacuation level and sign up for an emergency notification services through your county. The following links are included for your convenience.
